Almost anyone can participate, no matter their age, fitness level, or experience. Mountaineering, by contrast, takes years of training to be able to do at even an introductory level. As I said in the opening, hiking is a very relaxed and un-demanding activity. Mountaineering usually has a define objective, and mountaineers will place themselves in extreme danger to try and reach it.
Most of the time this is a summit of a particular mountain. For an example of some of the most extreme, goal-obsessed mountaineers out there, check out the trailer for Meru:. The final, main difference between mountaineering and hiking is the equipment needed. To hike, all you really need is a pair of boots, a backpack, and some food and water. More technical hikes will require more gear, but you can get by with just that. Mountaineering, however, requires a long list of equipment.
Check out my full list here , but even the most basic mountaineering expedition will require:. Although it may seem a little obvious, the first thing you need to do is be a good hiker. These trails have a start and endpoint that transverse a distance or loop back to where you begin. This beginning point is referred to as the trailhead. When evaluating the pursuits of hiking, trekking, backpacking, and mountaineering, hiking is the easiest and is the foundation on which each of these has developed making trekking, backpacking, and mountaineering all special classes of hiking.
Start with shorter hikes on level terrain at lower elevations and work you way up to more difficult hikes over time. Minimal gear and preparation are required for hiking. A backpack, water, food, proper clothing and footwear, jacket, map, and first-aid kit are a few of the items that you might need. A trek is a multiple-day journey in a remote location that transverses a much longer distance than a hike with beginning and ending points that are rarely the same.
Each segment is essentially a day hike over difficult terrain which could involve climate changes due to elevation as well as wind, rain, snow, or other frozen precipitation. For a trek, you must be in better physical shape than a typical hike and the process of preparation is far greater.
The gear involved is in-between that of hiking and backpacking. They will see that all other essentials like food, your extra clothes, and camping equipment reach the required destinations. Backpacking is a multiple-day journey in a remote location that transverses a longer distance with beginning and ending points that are rarely the same.
Backpackers carry all equipment needed for the adventure including tent, sleeping bag, food, cooking equipment, water, and more. Having multiple pairs of gloves also allows a climber to dry out one pair that may have gotten wet, while still having another pair to wear and stay warm.
More glove beta can be found here as well. Even in the summer in the mountains, multiple gloves are a must! Last but most definitely not least — the sun hoody. While a backpacking baselayer typically entails a short-sleeve synthetic t-shirt, mountaineers will want something more specific and versatile. Check out a blog post specifically about the sun hoody here for more info.
Hopefully, this has helped you distinguish some of the gear differences between backpacking and mountaineering, and why you may choose to bring or not bring certain items. Getting into the outdoors is an adventure no matter what, so make sure to be prepared! All the sweat accumulated and dried in your hair during your sunny journey across the lower glacier begins to itch as a fresh new layer accumulates under your sunscreen-rimmed hat.
